They’re on every shelf at every store, and the packaging swears they’re safe to flush. But here’s the uncomfortable truth – “flushable” wipes are one of the biggest lies in your bathroom right now.

If you fall for them, your plumbing is paying the price. Just because something goes down the toilet doesn’t mean it should!

What makes them so bad?

Toilet paper is designed to start breaking apart within seconds of hitting water. That’s the whole point – it falls apart fast so it doesn’t hang around in your pipes. Flushable wipes? Not so much. They’re made with synthetic fibers like polyester and plastic blends that hold together way longer than they should.

A study out of Ryerson University in Canada tested 23 different brands of “flushable” wipes and found that not a single one completely broke down. Only two even partially disintegrated. That’s a pretty rough track record for something with “flushable” right there on the label.

What happens when you flush them anyway?

Those intact wipes travel through your pipes and eventually hit a bend, a joint, or a rough spot – and they just stop. Over time, they pile up and tangle with grease, hair, and other debris to form stubborn blockages.

On a bigger scale, these wipe clogs (sometimes called “fatbergs”) cost U.S. wastewater utilities roughly $440 million a year in extra operating costs, according to the National Association of Clean Water Agencies. In your own home, the result is usually a backed-up sewer line that needs professional clearing – and that’s never a fun surprise.

But the package says they’re safe!

Here’s the thing – there are currently no federal regulations around using the word “flushable” on product labels. Manufacturers can slap that claim on packaging without any required testing or accountability. The wipes technically flush down your toilet, sure. But making it past the bowl and actually being safe for your plumbing system are two very different things. Plumbers across the country will tell you the same thing: wipes are one of the top reasons they get emergency clog calls.

So what should you do instead?

The simplest fix? Toss them in the trash. If you like the clean feeling wipes give you, that’s totally fine – just don’t flush them. You can also look into bidet attachments, which are an affordable one-time investment and way easier on your pipes (and the environment). And the golden rule of flushing stays the same: only toilet paper and human waste go down the toilet. Everything else belongs in the garbage.
